BATTEMENTS

Battement is a sound and sculptural device centred around a drum specially made for this project. Salt grains are placed on the stretched skin of the instrument and set in motion by vibrations produced by a sound composition based on Gnawa music. The sound, reworked to generate distortions and perceptual variations, is played on a loop. The vibrations activate the surface of the drum, making the movements of the salt visible. Light accompanies this phenomenon and accentuates its perception, making the sound part of both a visual and physical experience. Part of the project La texture de la transe, Battement explores the relationship between rhythm, vibration and matter, where sound becomes a vehicle for transformation.
